Tales of the Weird

If it weren't enough to play Reveille every morning at 6 a.m. here on AJ, they follow it up with the theme from the movie "Patton".

Reveille I can understand, but...Patton?

Oh yeah - nice icon there. :)

The dominant division here is Third Army, aka Patton's Own.

Why not just wake everyone up with the monologue from that movie? I'm sure the people of Kuwait would love for you to know that it's not your job to die for your country, it's your job to make the other poor bastard die for his.

Given that the other poor bastard is likely an Iraqi, it'd probably make the Kuwaitis sleep better at night.

I've never seen Patton. I guess I should consider myself lucky???

It's actually a very good rendition of its source book, Ladislas Farago's Patton: Ordeal and Triumph. Patton, like MacArthur, was a very odd fellow and even in the 1940s I don't think most people understood him very well; still, like MacArthur, he was an outstanding practitioner of the operational art and someone who could inspire troops to do the seemingly impossible.

It's an amazing movie, though I doubt it would be to your tastes. I liked it so much that I am now 453 pages into an 800 page biography of the man. Mei-Mei watched the (three hour) film with me and she was just rapt.

Does it talk about his reincarnation beliefs? In a seminar on Alexander the Great someone did a presentation on Patton's version of a couple of the battles.

A little. There's a scene where he turns off the road because he senses an ancient battlefield and claims he was present when the battle went down.

He took translations of battle accounts and things and corrected them in the margins.

It could be worse ... Reveille could be at 5AM. But the theme from Patton? Sounds like something they would have done on MASH.

Beware! The tradition was to run the undies of new arrivals up the flag pole when I was at the NWC. The Admiral was rather disenchanted but then that was the Marine Guards' idea of Saturday and Sunday morning fun.

EO complaints have put an end to such things.

I just watched that film recently. I like to watch American war movies between Memorial Day and the 4th. I also like Glory and Gettysburg.
