Settling in for the long haul

Mom sent me some 250-count organic cotton sheets and I've picked up a foam mattress pad. Since I've decided that Friday is Housework Day, I'll get those on the bed then, and also sweep and mop. Since I'm going to be here for a year, I insist on living like a person.

Since I can't have a harp sent out to me, I've been talking with 1LT A about options. He and his wife are heavily into Irish music, and he suggested the tin whistle. I am looking at web sites to try to find one that doesn't cost a fortune, ironic since a tin whistle is historically a musical instrument of the poor. He in turn has ordered a solid-body electric fiddle since a normal one cannot be shipped. We're intending to have an Irish band. I handed him my iPod at work today so he could listen to a whistle tune I've been wanting to learn (Scarce o' Tatties) and he ended up bogarting it to check out my music collection.

EDIT: I found a Clarke pennywhistle in the key of D through Amazon, for $14.95. It's been ordered.

I went to Eucharistic Minister orientation Tuesday evening so I'll be getting credentials for that. Rev. COL H. is high-placed in the Chaplaincy Corps but also hardcore right-wing Catholic. He actually managed to work t eh gheys into the class, quite a feat, I thought. He also doesn't permit anything that isn't spelled out clearly in the GIRM. I wish the first bit wasn't the prerequisite for the second. I thought about bowing out, but more than once I've gotten the feeling that Jesus was asking me, "Don't leave me alone with these people!"

Poor Jesus! He needs you. Save him from the hardcore right wing Catholics.

Glad to hear you're settling in for the long haul.

Why won't they ship a harp?
Jul. 15th, 2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
The harp in question is my own. I wrote to the manufacturer who strongly advised me against it because the glue will melt and the wood will warp.

AHHHH, makes sense. Wait until it cools down to ship it then? Or not?
Jul. 15th, 2009 06:04 pm (UTC)
No, because I'd have to send it back to the U.S. before the weather heated up again. I'm here until July 2010 remember.

Yeah, it doesn't start getting hot until late April, so you'd have plenty of months with it.

Given the cost of shipping, I'm still hesitant. I've ordered the whistle.

A sympathetic smile offends you? Hanh?

I don't use Google any more (I have problems with them) but Bing didn't show me anything horrible. I'm sorry you took it as offensive or insulting, because it really wasn't meant that way - I wasn't even aware that it had offensive meanings. :(

Yeah, sorry, I don't always get the punch line...

Yaaaaay for insisting on living like a person. And keeping a part of your trademark look, i.e. not cutting off your hair!

And your comment about what would Jesus say? Rocks!
Jul. 15th, 2009 06:37 pm (UTC)
For comments about church and Jesus that rock, I cede the floor to cinchntouch.

That there's some mighty interesting theology, fer shure!

I thought about bowing out, but more than once I've gotten the feeling that Jesus was asking me, "Don't leave me alone with these people!"

I'm going to remember that the next time I want to slap the shit out of someone at my parish...

Making your space livable is a biggie here. I have a wall locker plastered with pictures of Adrianna and artwork.

I'm rather utilitarian on the bed, though - I had the afghan that rockahulababy sent me for Christmas on the bed this winter, but now I have my poncho liner and that's it.

It's just kind of a pain at the end...

He's that much of a stickler but will allow a woman Eucharistic Minister?
Jul. 16th, 2009 01:08 am (UTC)
Mommy, you're a paralegal.

Paralegals help people.

You're helping the people who love Jesus, this makes Jesus happy.

I love Jesus!

Haha! You know, I think there might be something to that. Whenever I get really irritated enough to think maybe I should leave the Church again, I always have this weird feeling that I'd be abandoning him to the kooks.
