How do you feel about human cloning? Do you think the long-term societal impact will be positive or negative? Why?

My fear for cloning is that it could re-open the door to legal slavery. Is the clone property or a child? I worry about the former.

I don't believe the government would think that way, even for a minute. Even more scary (to me) than the slavery issue is the idea that clones might be produced for their parts - like need a new heart? lets grow one

If you can just grow the one organ, I don't believe there's anything ethically wrong with that. Need a new kidney? Just grow the kidney. That's what stem cells can do after all (and there are many other sources for stem cells than embryos).

Cloning and killing the clone for an organ is a nightmare scenario (rent "The Island") and is still slavery: ownership of another human being.

But they wouldn't be considered another human being - they'd be spare parts, kept under wraps until needed.

Watched surrogates tonight, but that's not quite the same

No, you can actually just clone an organ. So if you needed a kidney they'd use some of your own stem cells to grow just a kidney, not a whole person.
