The McChrystal Article

Here it is:

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/119236?RS_show_page=0

As regular readers know, I've had issues with McChrystal and gave his CSM shit in the pages of Stars and Stripes for saying that Bagram "was a war zone, not an amusement park." My response was, "Gee, I thought this was Disneyland. Thanks for setting me straight, Top!"

dekarch says it well: McC and his staff are idiots for forgetting what reporters do for a living. It's like the old rule from "Yes, Minister" that if there is a microphone present, always assume it is on.

The reporter doesn't understand a lot of what we are doing there. Then again, I may be one of the few who takes COIN seriously. This was something Captain B, aka The Skipper because he's a Navy SEAL in command of our office, always liked me for. If you're visiting the DFIP and enjoy your lunch and tea, you're enjoying it because I set up the SOP for hospitality. So COIN is a pet tactic of mine.

Anyway, Taliban Stan is gone, replaced by General Petraeus, whose patch is the one I'll be wearing on my right sleeve. The 16th made me wear their patch while I was with them and that made me sad.

I'm glad he's gone. He deserved to get sacked for talking shit about his chain of command. Way to motivate the Troops and inspire loyalty, General.

Petraeus is a much better choice anyway.

Yeah, whether one agrees with him or not, it was pretty damn stupid of him to do it before he retired.

Petraeus is a big damn genius hero (and there is not one particle of sarcasm there), but I don't know if even he can pull this haggis out of the fire. Be interesting to watch unless it all goes up in flames like the First/Second Afghan Wars*.

"Green Berets as Peace Corps."

Er, not quite.

I doubt my Uncle Joe (who did two tours in Vietnam, one of them on Project Phoenix) will ever read that article, but I'm pretty sure he'd get a laugh out of that line.

Exceot in the sense that the Green Berets are supposed to do for armed forces what the Peace Corps does for civilians, which I assume is to improve their baseline infrastructure methods.

I never saw Green Berets as commandos I see them more as cadre or trainers which is what the Peace Corps does.

Having my sympathies as always, Ms. Tepin.

The last thing needed in charge of the armed forces (currently in a WAR BTW) is a Glenn Beck, a Rush Limbo, or some sick combo of the two. -_-;

Gah, my brother is STILL pissed-- his guys spent two months growing proper beards before they headed back for round 2...and when they got there, they were ordered to get rid of them and look obviously military. *head desk*

Shut down the market, too, for no stated reason-- they didn't have any published hazards. Guess it was another "amusement park" objection. (Oh, no! They may trade shampoo for more nifty bowls and scarves!)
