Sigh....

So, I got my computer back yesterday. Yay!

...and then it turned out that it has no sound. I tried every sound control, as did Steve, so back to HP it goes.

Darn. I was hoping that I was going to have a relatively trouble-free PC. I guess I should have gone with the Mac after all.

I should have commented yesterday, but it was too damn hot.

When Brian finally hooked up Liblikas last week to the internet, I couldn't understand why there was NO sound, especially as he'd played around with it last month (and got ALL the speakers working) and I had watched DVDs on it.

So I went to the Control Panel and went through every option under Sounds & Devices. Okay, so the various speaker options were correct (balance, etc.) but, for some crazy reason, the mute was enabled. I was so relieved to disable it and have my sound back.

If you haven't sent it back, can you see if that is what happened with yours? I believe, when it goes into the shop, the techs automatically mute all computers so the sounds won't drive them batty.

Nothing is set to mute; that was the first thing I thought of. So I'm pretty pissed.

Oh, bollocks.

Stab-in-the-dark time...might it be a driver issue? I had the devil of a time with my PC doing the same, and eventually disabling the driver, then rebooting, worked.

Willing to try it. Which driver?

[This is on Windows XP Home]

Click into:

Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager

Scroll down to
Sound, video and game controllers

Click on that, and a list should come up below which will include the audio driver.

1. Right-click on the driver and select Disable, then reboot.

If that doesn't work, you could try:

2. Right-click on the driver and select Update Driver, follow the on-screen instructions, and reboot.

Fingers crossed...
