Oh no! The Bear is hurt!

Yesterday at 10 a.m. I got a phone call from Steve's number. At the other end I could hear him moaning and making inarticulate noises, and not in a good way. I thought he was having a heart attack and asked him twice, "Should I call an ambulance?" He still kept making noises so I hung up, called 911 in Orange County and had them forward me to the San Diego Fire & Rescue. I sent the ambulance over to the house, got a hold of seki_raku and had her rush over to the house, then called Ryan again (he'd been in the shower when I called first) and sent him to meet Steve at the emergency room.

What had happened was this. We have an apartment-sized washing machine. Sometimes the hose that drains into the sink gets loose. It did this time and flooded the floor. Steve was moving furniture around and even out of the house when his back spasmed. He lay down on the bed and a spasm hit him that was strong enough that he fell off the bed, and that's when he called. It was six hours of an anti-spasmodic drip before he could sit up. Ryan took him home and stayed at the house while Steve napped. In the mean time, I had gotten permission to leave early, so I ditched the green pajamas, packed up, and drove back to San Diego. Traffic was hellish and it took three hours.

Today he's needing my help to get out of chairs and I have to pick up anything that requires reaching down. He's still hurting a lot, but it's better than it could have been since it was very possible for him to have hit his head, but he didn't.

New unit is MPs. MPs do dumb things. LOTS of dumb things. Ruck marches scheduled for after lunch, when the sun is at its worst since for some reason an early morning step-off made too much sense. WAT? I'm special staff, since the SJA is "corporate counsel" for the battalion, and that will suit me very well. Especially since I have a green light to put in a packet for Warrant Officer school. It won't be pretty, but it will be worth it; I just have to start training now and training hard.

And you know how close to home that parallel is about the fact that he could "have hit his head" but didn't. I'm sure you're both scared and hugely relieved that you were able to send help for him. Do you have a timeline for how long it will take for him to shake off the spasms/pain?

He may have slipped a disc; we won't know unless the pain goes on for five weeks or so.

The best-case prognosis is that he'll start feeling better in four more DAYS. I need to be here just to help him rise from chairs.
