Shoes

Well, I meant to get a pair of sports sandals because my old ones are shot, but instead, Steve and I walked out of the store each with a pair of Vibram Fivefingers:

I know you have to adjust to them slowly, but I can't wait to try running in these. I already did two miles today in my Lady Isaacs, but I'll start with the "toe shoes" tomorrow.

oh cool...which models did you get? I've been eyeing those Vibram Fivefingers for a while and really like the Bikila LS ones that I tried on in a store but haven't been able to get over the high price (since I don't know if I would really wear them since I"m so used to wearing supportive sneakers)

I got the KSOs. I tried running in them and OMG the jarring to my bones. I might try again on a rubberized track.

Yes! That's why I hesitate to buy them. I tried them on and ran a few steps in them at a running expo several years ago. Maybe it was the concrete floors or maybe it was because no one warned me not to run with a heel strike but OW. It just immediately struck me as painful. I keep hearing that my body with adjust and automatically change my stride to a midfoot-strike to avoid that pain but I'm worried I wouldn't make the switch and then be stuck with expensive shoes. If I did get them, I had planned to start by running in them for 5 minutes at a time on grass at a park somewhere. Apparently my calf muscles would also need time to build up to the stresses of the changed stride too. But I read Born to Run as well as various other articles and the idea of barefoot running really appeals to me.

The Lady Isaacs force me to run midfoot. This has saved my knees; I was looking at surgery until I switched to them. I'll never use conventional shoes again.

Well that's a hearty recommendation. Saved you from surgery :-)
