Decorating thoughts

This is just me throwing out initial pitches, but I'd ultimately like to do something.

Our condo is, well, kinda beige. Some pics:

The predominant colours are beige, brown and blue. I'm thinking about how to add some more colour. Fake plants are a good possibility (can't have real ones or certain blue cats who shall remain nameless will dig in/throw about/crap in the pots). I'm on the lookout for more paintings for the walls. Finally I'm considering painting some walls. I think painting the whole living room would be too much visually, but one or two walls might work. I think some blue in the bedroom might be nice, and stencils are something seki_raku knows about.

I know there are some armchair designers out there. I'd like to hear ideas.

You need ... ART!

I have a bunch I'm not using. Wanna come over and look through it to see if you like any of it?

I think that's a great idea.

Excellent. I'm free tomorrow evening and probably Sunday evening, too, or we can do an evening next week. Let me know what works best for you.

Probably Sunday evening for me. The dining room painting (the Three Magi on bikes, one of whom has a Puerto Rican flag) is a favourite of mine, but that space needs something larger.

Okay, Sunday evening works. I'll be available after about 6:30.

It's like a sasquatch sighting, your husband accidentally caught in the frame. He really does exist!

are those the IKEA Kaustby chairs? we have those, too. I totally suck at home decor, so I'm going to keep my mouth shut on suggestions.

Yup, you called it about the chairs!

Paint does wonders. What about those rich adobe colours because you do live in the Southwest?

Curtains & rugs! I know, you have cats ... but even heavy denim curtains would work in your color scheme. And yes, artwork. The colors & furniture are fine for a base to decorate over, imo. Not really loving the mirrored closet doors, but maybe if you stuck some decorative molding over the stark metal frame it would look better?

Oh, and for an accent color: ORANGE. You've already got it on the afghan on the couch. It's blue's complement, opposite on the color wheel, and it really jumps out, in a good way, in a blue-dominated color scheme. A nice bright picture of tiger lilies or something like that will look fabulous. Orange throw cushions. You could back it off to terra cotta, if that's too wild.

Not a big fan of orange, but I love terra cotta. The sun over the stove in the kitchen is made of that.

Instead of painting whole walls, you might consider putting up wallpaper borders, either on their own or to frame all the art works that are going to grace your walls. Or, at least, put up the art first and then reconsider.

The other thing that might work is if you got a white lattice border maybe 9 inches deep and attached it from the ceiling a couple inches away from the wall. Then you could twine vines through it to create a little rustic nook, with a few vines trailing down at each end (perhaps where the dining table is). There are also excellent fake trees available these days to act as focal sentinels to any wall. You certainly live in a climate where they wouldn't look fake. And the kitten posse won't be able ::crosses fingers:: to demolish the greenery!

Personally, I've never felt the need to paint as long as I covered up the walls in interesting and colourful ways (paintings, framed needlepoint, wall cube shelves, masks (like my Indonesian painted cat ones), an eclectic framed mirror or two, postcards enlarged to 8-1/2x11 (like my Lawrence in the desert one sent from Jordan), etc., etc.

I have to admit remembering when my walls were bare on Prince Arthur and apologizing to a friend at the time about the lack of my personality on the walls. He laughed at me and said there was plenty of my personality anyway. But I guess I wanted to see it for myself.

I knew you'd have ideas, oh yes.

I'm not going to put up wallpaper borders around art because we intend to be renting this unit out when we can secure a house. The hanging vine idea is neat and I already mentioned artificial plants. I was looking for a wall tapestry for the dining area; I'll see tonight what ebenbrooks has.

The wallpaper border idea might work around our very dull shutters, though...

Yes, art, and not just pictures - put some neat stuff around there. Wall hangings, collectibles we have native american stuff hanging on one of our walls (peace pipes, dream catchers) one one wall and hand painted tambourines on another. Album art works well too if you can find it.
