Glaedelig Jul!

I really do need to use the LJ more. I mean, I can only post little short thoughts on FB and my thoughts are usually bigger than that.

We celebrated Jul on the 22nd. The people who are in our kindred came over for a Solstice dinner and ceremony. Steve felt very strongly that the Danish tradition had to represent, so we bought a "Confucius style goose" frozen at 99 Ranch, lots of beets and potatoes and herrings and rye crispbreads and cheeses. We also tasted the mead we'd been brewing and it was wonderful! We are never going to buy a bottle at Bevmo again; that stuff is usually white wine with honey rather than real mead anyway. It's also drop-dead easy to make at home.

The goose was an adventure. About 4 hours before the meal, Steve cut open the plastic, lifted the bird--and I yowled as its head and neck flopped down to the counter. A closer look showed that it still had its feet and that it wasn't gutted. Fortunately, a friend rapidly found a link on how to gut a goose and that, paired up with Steve's experiences hunting and field-dressing got the goose stuffed with apples and plums and into the oven. If it had been only me, our guests would have ended up eating lasagne.

The meal worked out well. The goose was a little overcooked, but since this was the first one Steve had done after seeing his mom cook them over the years there is room for "lessons learned". We'll also be buying future geese from Iowa Meat Farms near us.

That meant that the holiday was behind us on the 22nd. On the 23rd, Steve was going to take me to Orange County for a new tattoo but I was exhausted and dehydrated so we cancelled. He also gave me a new Fitbit, but AT&T ruined Christmas by selling him one that didn't sync with my cell phone. AT&T knows I have a Droid, not an iPhone because they're our carrier. It was annoying because I was really very happy to get the Fitbit, but it has to be exchanged.

Today is Christmas. Steve is at work, writing an appellate brief. I took a walk to see what was open and predictably, only CVS was.

The sky is now overcast and I've been watching Netflix all day. We do have one Christmas custom, and that is our annual viewing of "Conan the Barbarian" which I got on Blu-Ray this year to watch after dinner. I'm making ravioli.

Cool. :) Yeah, game is really easy to overcook. (Duck, venison, goose, pheasant, etc.)

OUrs was pretty chill. Steve's brother came over, we played games and made pizza.

I don't know, but I don't like cooking anything that still has a face attached

You made mead? That's awesome! Is there any left? I'd love to try some.
