In which I become That Guy

Everybody knows that I read a lot about simplifying your life, downsizing your stuff, etc. The intention behind changes like that is to spend more time concentrating on the things that actually matter: relationships, creativity, enjoyment of the moment. These stories are all transformation from being That Guy who drives long commutes in order to have a house and trappings of lifestyle without actually having, y’know, a life.

I have become That Guy. I realized this as I was wearily driving home yesterday. One of my associates here bought a Groupon so she and I could go to yoga together and I don’t think her schedules and mine will intersect. Or if they do, they’ll leave me with nothing but Yin or Gentle yoga classes as my options. I don’t cook in my gorgeous kitchen, and I am going to de-subscribe from the Netflix DVD service because it takes forever for me to get to a DVD.

The Army is the complication, as ever. I lose three days a month because I drive out on Friday, and since I have to aggressively tackle my weight and fitness I go to the gym after work rather than doing the yoga I’d prefer to be doing. I’m at a gym that I like, and that is only a block or so from my office, but it’s still making for kind of an isolated life.

How much longer do you have for the Army?

I find it's easy to get into a rut where you don't cook. Shitty weather and some big dental bills are getting me back into cooking most nights, though.

TEN MORE YEARS.

Steve's been doing all the cooking lately. I need to pick a couple of recipes to prepare myself this long weekend.

Ack. :(

I've been experimenting with Chinese food, since the Chinese food up here sucks. Tonight's chicken chow mein with homemade noodles. Doesn't hold a candle to Mandarin Chef's noodles, but I think they're close. :)

What about cooking together? It's one thing I remember with great fondness from my first relationship 4 decades ago.

It might not be practical considering your daily commute, but is something you two could do on the three weekends you don't have Army stuff.

In a decision that will make you grin, we are going to start watching Star Trek beginning with the first season of the original series. I had never realized that Steve is a Star Trek geek, who went NUTS with anger watching the JJ Abrams "reboot" because the rollout dates on the starships were wrong.

...the rollout dates on the *ships* were wrong? Kirk, Uhura, and Chekov were in the same Academy class and the *ship* dates got him?

/I enjoyed the reboot but had to learn a whole different kind of suspension of disbelief
//speaking of questionable canon: is TAS on your watch list? it was streaming on Netflix as of when I rewatched it last year or so
///PS: I don't know Steve from Adam, but I think he's my kind of ST geek... hi, Steve.
////just for fun: watch for clues the reboot screenwriters read Diane Carey novels. Pretty sure the reboot film had at least a couple hat-tips to Final Frontier, and I think Into Darkness is one part Wrath of Khan and one part Dreadnought!.
/////ok, maybe I am still a huge Star Trek geek too. Maybe.
