Bye bye, Facebook

Just so people know, I've deactivated my Facebook. I don't know what it is, but something about it just made my skin crawl, worse than MySpace. When someone sent me a friends invite and I was actually dreading logging on, I realized I didn't have to and nuked the thing.

I have a friend who calls it "Facecult".

I hate MySpace, and everyone I know who's on Facebook bitches about how they hate it. So, three cheers!

I actually have a purpose for MySpace. It's really neat to find crazy things like Iranian classic rock bands.

Have you seen "Persepolis"?

Not yet, but I hear it's amazing! And it's in French so I don't need subtitles.

Yeah, it's fantastic. The animation is great and the story and writing are really snazzy. Of course I had to watch it in the original language and the voice actors/actresses are perfect. You'll love it.

I had a Facebook for all of ten minutes. I signed up and started creating my profile, and when I realized how much personal information they wanted, I nixed it.

I hate it too, but it's an integral form of communication in college, so my social life would materially suffer without one.

I have a MySpace and a Facebook. I log into MySpace maybe once every 5 months or so, but I do use it to track bands that I'm interested. I find it invaluable for finding good and diverse music!

I log into my Facebook every day, but the only reason that I joined is that a fair number of my close relatives are on it, and it's a lot easier for us to keep in touch that way, than through email, etc. With a couple of exceptions, I only have people I personally know in RL on my Facebook page, and that makes it tolerable for me. I already declined one emo band who wanted to friend me.

I'm sort of figuring out Facebook and I really don't like it-- or don't get it yet. I gave up on My Space ages ago. I am super protective of my Facebook profile, most everyone I friend or friend knows me in person or knows me by "real name" and so I am ok with friending them. Otherwise, I'm keeping it as far away from fandom and my online life as I can get.

The other thing that bugs me is that it's all so high school-- literally. I've encountered many of my classmates. Both my ex best friends from high school are there, but they're profiles are locked down and since we don't speak, I can't read them. And I'm too immature and petty to friend request them. So... yeah... it's high school.

I really need to set up a Facebook account for professional networking but I haven't yet. All my friends have one. I am such a Luddite hermit person.

How ironic, I just sent you a Facebook thing.

I didn't like receiving that sort of thing. That's another reason I deleted the Facebook.

Nah, it was an e-mail asking you to join FB. I didn't remember if you had one or not already.

Oh, an e-mail to join? But I was already one of your Facebook friends. I thought you meant one of those "Poke so-and-so" which I really disliked.

And you're right, I hate receiving a lot of those things too. Their all for stupid shit and it wastes so much time.

Funny
I noticed recently that because of the higher adoption rate I am using FB and other services far more than LJ. But, yah, one has to manage the privacy aspects closely (not as easy as LJ) and block all of the annoying "applications."
