Shopping geekery

commissaries.com has floor plans by aisle or products for all the commissaries. I've printed out one "by aisle" for Miramar and am going to start arranging grocery lists accordingly.

Also, cvs.com delivers to APO addresses. Good to know.

That's too funny. My mom shops at the commissary at 32nd so I'll have to print one out for her.

I only use that commissary when I have to. I find prices are a tad higher and the place is depressing, with the concrete floors and exposed metal beams.

I think my parents mostly go because water is sometimes cheaper there. My mom tried to help me with diapers and formula by getting them at the commissary but they were way too expensive (despite the Filipino lady who argued otherwise.)

The Miramar commissary is cheaper than the 32nd street one. I can tell you that even the 32nd street one is cheaper than any civilian grocery store when it comes to meats, dairy, and staples. However, non-food items like diapers are likely cheapest at Wal-Mart.

I was told (never tried it myself), that if you put APO, NY (where it all goes through, anyway) for places that don't ship to APOs, they will, because they will think it's a US address. That's just stuff I heard from when I was in Afghanistan trying to get things shipped to me from places that wouldn't ship to APOs. I normally would just have it sent to my mom's and then have her send it to me, so I never tried it.

I'll try that if it turns out to be an issue.

I hope it works. If you are deploying and need my help, let me know. And in late April I will be closer. :)

Late April is when I'm supposed to be gone, but the process for sending us out has barely even begun. I'm agnostic on this deployment.

I know that feeling. I didn't believe I was deploying until I stepped foot in Afghanistan. We actually left on time, too. That was something to mark the calendars for.

Keep us up to date and I'm here for you if you need any help. :)

For while you're deployed... drugstore.com. They rock, they ship to APO, and they carry a lot of stuff.

I second this. I LOVED them. They also were pretty fast in their shipment.
