God in the White House

I just finished God In The White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency From John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.  I'd seen the author, Randall Balmer, interviewed on Jon Stewart.  He spoke very interestingly on the subject, so I got the book from the library.

Unfortunately, the book itself is pretty shallow.  I did learn some things, like how the term "Religious Right" originated among Evangelical Christians while they were busy trying to restore prayer in schools.  (Now they complain about the term, forgetting that they made it up to apply to themselves).

The role of religion in the presidency is a huge subject, and the book's only 196 pages, excluding appendices which are speeches by presidents on their personal faith.  This is far too short.

That's too bad. I was hoping that the book was as good as it sounded. It's certainly a very interesting topic.

I am going to track down his documentary series on Evangelicalism "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory".
