On Sonia Sotomayor

Obviously she needs no introduction at this point. I've been reading some pretty insane reactions to Judge Sotomayor's nomination. I hate to say this, but in many cases it really does look like white people shitting themselves because someone with a complexion unlike theirs has been raised to a position of power.

Now, I will say that when I heard her name put forward, I immediately started Googling to find out what kind of ACLU-spawned lefty horror Obama had picked, because face it, that's what I expected. I had visions of someone who'd started out in the Public Defender's office and then moved on to ACLU or Southern Poverty Law Center.

Well, she started as a District Attorney and moved on to business law. Here's the Pavis & Harcourt website. I have a hard time picturing some wild-eyed leftist radical working here:

Elevated to the federal bench by George H.W. Bush, she then went on to write opinions like this one, wherein she vacates the decision of the lower court that a woman was racially discriminated against, although she upholds that she was not accommodated according to the dictates of the ADA:

She also affirmed that federal funds could be withheld from foreign aid organizations that performed abortions:

Finally, SCOTUSblog studied all 96 of the race-related cases in which she was involved and discovered Sotomayor dismissed cases alleging racial discrimination at a ratio of 8-1:

In other words, all this huffing and puffing about her being a "fascist, racist and sexist" is just that: huffing and puffing. I suspect it's being fueled by Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter because this is the kind of stupid and illogical hate they love to generate. I predict they'll suddenly get amnesia about it when Sotomayor starts voting with Scalia and Thomas nine times out of ten.

I've been so angry about the right-wing attacks on her. She was appointed by Bush Sr. to her first position and she hasn't proven to be a way, out there wacky leftist liberal like they all think. She's also not a racist. The sound-bytes I hear from the Ann Colters, Glen Becks and others just makes me sick. But as always, the Catholic Bloggers are tearing her down for not being a "real" Catholic.

I think she'll be fine and an asset on the court.

Not a "real Catholic"? Why, because she's divorced (though not remarried, which is kosher)? Or because if she attends Mass she doesn't call attention to herself about it, which is also kosher? It can't be her record on abortion.

I don't know where the speculation stems from, but I remember seeing some blogger say, something like "i wonder if she's a real Catholic" nonetheless, it really pisses me off.

I'm going to hide under a rock for the next little while because the news these days sucks.

What I've read says that she doesn't regularly attend Mass.

But fuck it, we have 6 justices and we're down to one Protestant if she's confirmed. Why doesn't the whole Church have a party?

Silly Ej, don't you realize that unless they all graduated from Ave Maria University and are married and using NFP, or alternatively unmarried and consecrated virgins, they are unacceptable?

It turns out I'm the only one here who doesn't enjoy the masochistic penance of the Catholic blogosphere.

I don't either. I was getting the Sotomayor hate off a neocon blog.

Because we all know that Real Catholics are basically Evangelical fundies who have funny-looking things at church, and who vote lock-step with the likes of Dobson and Falwell. Anyone else ain't really real.

totally right
The GOP and conservative voices think that they can get back on top by screaming about anything the other side does. This will mobilize their base, and it works to create a new reality in a viral-marketing kind of way (I was talking to a friend who expressed concern that she's a racist chosen for the SCOTUS because she's a minority and not because she's qualified) that may expand their base. But for anyone willing to do any amount of digging and reading, this sort of thing is just alienating and silly. For example: not that Newt cares, but after seeing him jump on this bandwagon, I DEFINITELY won't support him if he runs in 2012.

Re: totally right
It's struck me that perhaps there is indeed racism in action from the Obama administration, in assuming that because she's Latina she will thus be liberal. Her voting record suggests otherwise, but if her race and sex are the only thing they were paying attention to, that would explain it. McCain made the same mistake when he decided on Palin as his running mate and that ended up costing him the election.

Those Neo-Cons HATE themselves. And so they take out their hatred on people who aren't them.

Put that woman on the bench, I say. Prove to those stinking elephants how badly they LOST.
