Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Since I was in north OC/Los Angeles I was able to spend a lot of time with Lil from Montreal.  Yesterday was the very dull but occasionally brilliantly informative Yellow Ribbon event to let soldiers and their families know what programs are available and what rights we have.  I now know why TriCare cut me off after 27D school: I let TriWest know but I didn't inform DEERS.  I had to either call them and fax my orders or go to the DEERS centre on Miramar.  (I'm not bound to Miramar, I just like their customer service best.)

After that, the other enlisted, hereafter referred to as the Pep Boys (Manny, Moe and Jack!) suggested Outback so I suggested it to the officers and Lil because she can eat there and I thought she'd enjoy meeting the attorneys.  Ma'am had come up and she can also eat at Outback.  I called SGT S to tell her where it was after Lil looked it up but got no answer for about an hour and a half.  So Ma'am, MAJ T, MAJ T's two friends who are his homefront, americanstd , Lil and I all went over there.  Lil enjoyed talking to everyone; she does tax prep for a living in Canada and Ma'am is a tax attorney.  americanstd and MAJ T hit it off insanely well.  I thought they'd met before but they hadn't, so they are new buddies for when we get back.

Halfway through the meal, Ma'am realized she'd abandoned MSG W and had to fetch him from the hotel.  Finally the Pep Boys showed up with SGT S's family in tow, or at least some of them; she has six kids.  They had to sit elsewhere, but we talked to them a wee bit.  The Kid might be well, a kid, but he is very courteous and Lil was impressed.  Hope for the future, too.

FURTHERMORE, the manager came over to us as we were eating with $80 in his hand.  Two women at the bar had taken up a collection to put towards the meals we soldiers were eating.  We were all very touched.  Lil hadn't seen that kind of thing before.

Surprisingly, I ran into ebenbrooks at the conference!  There was some kind of musician's event going on and I'll have to look at his LJ to find out what it was.  All the YR attendees were given free admission to the concert but obviously we didn't go.  Props to ebenbrooks for that.

I do have the unwelcome news that there are Yellow Ribbon events to attend 30 days, 60 days and 90 days after I return.  I believe we're supposed to have time away from the Army after we come back, so I have to research that.  It might be a National Guard rule only.  I do not want to attend three dull two-day events at hotels away from my house and cat after I return.

Oh, that is awesome. When my friend Becky came to FL straight from Iraq to hit Disney with her kids, I picked her up from the airport and took her to the mall so she could get a bathing suit. The shop manager gave her a 20% discount for being a soldier. She almost cried (she was very tired).
