Kitty colds

Mei-Mei has come down with a URI (upper respiratory infection). Apparently in cats they hang around and re-appear in times of stress. Mei-Mei and the Kaiser both had awful ones at the Humane Society, if you recall.

Wednesday she wasn't eating, so I took her to Dr. Green. She gave Mei-Mei fluids, vitamins and a series of blood tests. Mei-Mei came home and ate a little and the blood tests came back with excellent results.

Thursday I wasn't home much of the day and on Thursday night noticed she was making strange grunting noises. Later we realized she was having problems breathing so we took her to the emergency vet. This was not a good experience and we aren't using VCA anymore. The vet was young and kind of, well, tweaky. He spoke very fast and wanted to do chest x-rays, which was good, a glucose test, which was good, but also to keep her overnight in an oxygen cage and run a blood gases test to "see how well her blood is oxygenating". We said no and took her home. Trauma of the evening was a woman and man who came in with a dog who'd been hit by a car and who was clearly not going to make it. The dog was the woman's family and my heart just broke for her.

This morning I was at the vet when it opened. Dr. Green looked at Mei-Mei and said URI. She has received a shot of antibiotics and I have a regime of them to give her. She's lethargic and still grunting but Dr. Green was optimistic about her recovery. We just feel awfully guilty for having brought little Ivan home, because that's what set this off. Still, we love him and he loves us and he loves Mei-Mei and very much wants to be friends. He doesn't jump on her or try to roughhouse, either. So we hope she'll recover soon so we can go back to being a happy family in time for Christmas.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear it ... I hope she recovers quickly! Do you think Ivan might have brought a bug home with him?

(She's lucky to have you)
