Weekend Update

Busy weekend, but Sunday has been restful. A good thing since next weekend is drill.

Yesterday we drove out to what turned out to be a really nice outdoor shooting range at Pala. The Pala band of native Americans are one who have made a lot of money on casinos. A shooting club rents land from them for their range. You can shoot anything. So we packed up Steve's new Moisin Nagant (aka the Moist Nugget; it's a Soviet rifle) and a bubba'd up Ruger that is now essentially a semiautomatic .22 rifle.

We met with Kirk and his wife Masha. Kirk also has a Nugget and Masha is Russian, but didn't feel like shooting. We started at the buffet at the casino, which is $21 bucks. That amount of money is wasted on me; this was breakfast and no way was I going to eat that much food. Yes they had crab, but I wanted BREAKFAST. So I had corned beef hash, a little blini, some eggs and some of the desserts they had out. For lunch this would have been okay, but not breakfast.

Steve and Kirk enjoyed firing their Nuggets and I gave it a try myself. The thing does have a mean kick to it, but it's the trigger weight (14 pounds of pressure) and the noise that made it not be fun for me. The RugerRifle on the other hand, is my friend. I shot at the pig-shaped iron target at 100 yards and not only hit it consistently, I could hit wherever on the pig I wanted. We need to get out there with someone who owns an AR-15.

So that was fun. We went home and watched Anthony Bourdain (TV chef who travels) get drunk and talk about food in Malaysia and Sicily. He's such an ass. I'd say we want to party with him but we are not worthy.

Today I held true to my word about wanting to shake up my appearance a bit. We went to Wal-Mart and got our eyes examined. The doc was trying out contact lenses on me, and I'm wearing them now. The left eye is for close in vision and the right is for distance. I'm going to have to go back and tell him they're a no-go because the combination is great for close and mid-distance, but I didn't like it for driving at all. So I'm going to get long-distance contacts and just use reading glasses. They're cheap.

I also bought a pair of black geeky glasses as progressives, a cute rainbow patterned pair for long distance only and have ordered a set of goggles for shooting. All of these are from Zenni Optical. They don't seem to have my plaid purple glasses anymore, but oh well.

Then there was the Superbowl. The Patriots lost in a nail-biter of a game. Up until 57 seconds before the end, there was every bit of doubt that the Pats might still beat the Giants. Alas, due to clumsiness the Giants won. This makes George RR Martin happy. I don't want George RR Martin to be happy, the gluttonous lazy fuck.

Work tomorrow. Paycheques are good.

Aren't non-Bubba'd up Rugers still semiautomatic .22lr rifles?

We were all cheering for the Giants in this house - and what a great game.

I had some kind of contacts that were actual bifocal contacts at one time - the center was for one distance and the edges were for the other
