Human venom

Humans are filthy creatures, my good self included. Here's how I found out.

Yesterday evening, I knew I was due to clip my fingernails. I hate having my fingernails longer than my fingertips and I also have to cut them for harp playing. I forgot and apparently scratched the back of my neck, breaking the skin.

I noticed it was itchy. It swelled up to a round lump by about 7 pm. When we left the party at 10, it was the size of a hen's egg, sliced sideways, covering the entire back of my neck. I was less than enthusiastic about going to the ER at 11 pm on a Saturday night, so I decided to go to bed and see what happened.

Today the swelling is way, way down, but the site is very tender and sore. I do make a point of washing where my nail and skin come together, so I shudder to think of what would have happened if this was not my habit.

I read this earlier and just had a thought strike me. It sounds more like cat scratch fever because of the similarity to a sudden invasive scratch than a random infection. You might want to try soaking some paper towels in warm salty water (for salt's antiseptic properties) and laying them on the site. I advocate the use of paper towels rather than cloth because you can then dispose of contaminated materials.

Also, did you take any NSAIDs? Anyway, I hope the swelling deflates soon.

The swelling is almost completely gone now. What does NSAID stand for? I should have thought of the warm salty water, too.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

You've already gotten the answer to the acronym. Also, did you apply something like Neosporin? I happen to love Bactrim spray (because it's also an anaesthetic and you don't have to actually TOUCH the infected part).

We don't keep Neosporin in the house because Steve is horribly allergic to it. Aside from Bactine, I've never used another. So let me see if we have Bactine...

Just goes to show you how long it's been since I needed to spray an infected spider bite, that I forgot the NAME of the spray.

Yikes. Glad it's going down, though.

Thank gods the swelling is almost gone!

Completely gone by now. I looked yesterday, using two mirror, and it's definitely not a cat scratch.
