Back to the Jack

Hello from steamy and miserable Ft. Jackson, SC! I'm actually outside of Gate 1 at a cheap hotel. I'm here for a suicide prevention workshop.

I got up at 3:30 so I could make a 6 a.m. flight. Flight was uneventful; Tucson to Atlanta with a three hour layover. The Army could have saved itself some money if I'd just rented my car at ATL and driven, because it would have taken just as long as the wait. I did have some outstanding pizza with mozzarella di bufala and a paper-thin crust, though, and I lost all self-control and bought a coconut cupcake, which was divine.

It's in the 90s here in SC and humid. I texted Nathan to say I don't know how I survived two and a half months of Basic Training from June-late August. He responded, "Because you're awesome". Okay, I'll take that answer.

The workshop is pretty good. I had a feeling it wouldn't be a waste of time, and it hasn't been. The goal is to get the person to what the instructors call "safe-for-now" while you get them to the care they need and that a layperson shouldn't try to provide. It's suicide "first aid", as it were.

After going to the base gym (the one on Ft. Benning is MUCH better), I drove around a little and tried to find the Basic Training barracks, but couldn't locate them. I think they are closer to the main gate rather than Gate 1. I also want a photo of the iconic Ft. Jackson water tower because I never have gotten one previously.

I had vegan Vietnamese food for dinner, since I wanted something LIGHT. It is just too hot and disgusting for anything else.

This is a two-day, so I'll be leaving late morning on Wednesday.

Vietnamese food is awesome when it's hot and nasty out. It hasn't been as hot here as it is there, but coastal New England is very much a swamp.

I like one of those cold Vietnamese vermicelli dishes (bun, I think,) when it's hot and gross.
