Book recommendation

I'm about halfway through Nadia Bolz-Weber's book Pastrix and I can't stop reading. She's a 44 year old Lutheran pastor, married to another Lutheran pastor, with two kids. She is also foul-mouthed, a punk, a recovering alcoholic, and heavily tattooed. She's far from self-congratulatory about her church, The House For All Sinners and Saints and talks about humiliating failures. I reeeeeally want to talk about this book with people, so if you are interested, check it out.

Oh, I should also say that she is ELCA, the most liberal branch of the Lutheran family tree. Her church is a welcoming community, although when she converted to Lutheranism, ELCA had still not given the green light to queer pastors. The minister who converted her, or as she put it, the vampire who brought her over, is a gay man in a very longtime relationship who was sticking to the church despite its disapproval. His side won. This aspect of the ELCA Lutheran churches will no doubt interest many of you.

Huh, cool. I'll have to check it out. A good friend of mine from Augustana was caught up in the witch hunt before the ELCA changed. (He was doing his parish internship, when he was outed, I believe.)

We're ELCA. The church has been very tolerant of our poly triad.

I want to check them out. There's one that looks promising in north Tucson. I don't believe in a personal God, but I get the impression that's the last of their theological concerns.

I read that book recently and it was awesome. I'm ELCA Lutheran myself.

I'm ELCA. I haven't read the book yet (plan to), but I have been following Nadia Bolz-Weber on Facebook for a while. Glad you like it, and I'll be interested in hearing about your experience if you do try out the ELCA.

Turns out that Beautiful Savior's only Sunday service is at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and I live half an hour away. I may need to wait until the fall.

I was raised in and among ELCA and my extended family work in the church. My principal complaint not deeply intertwined with having a bunch of family I don't like much waist-deep in the church is that our local church preferred to use the shittiest, most white-livered hymns as opposed to A Mighty Fortress etc. That book sounds cool.
