I finally seem to have gotten some more benefit from being in the Reserves. Yesterday I got a phone call from Ma'am (my LTC) saying that an estates-planning sole practitioner who rents an office at the firm where Ma'am works wanted to take to me.

E's paralegal is off on maternity leave. She's been making do with temps, but they're all substandard. Ma'am recommended me.

So I worked 7 hours for E today. She was delighted that I already knew what I was doing; estate planning runs according to court rules similar to civil litigation. (Family law exists in its own legal world.) Since this is only going to go on for about 10 weeks max, we decided that I'll work there Monday-Wednesday and I'll keep up the family law job Thursday-Friday since that's a permanent gig, even it if is only 2 days a week.

My cubicle is on one side of the hall. The other side of the hall is lawyers' offices. So if I look to the left I see E's door, and if I look to the right I see Ma'am's door. It's been very weird being in a workplace with Ma'am 15 feet away, and in civilian clothes. Also, I knew she and her family were SF/Fantasy nerds, but she actually has a stained-glass sculpture of a dragon on a shelf in her office.

So. Provided that the universe does not give with one hand and take with the other, I should be okay for a couple of months.

Not only stability, but who knows what doors will open for you from a source other than the Thursday-Friday one when the 10 weeks are up. And ::giggles:: I like the dragon. Because even lawyers should have some of their personality present in the office and not merely on their person.

The more good references I have, the better, that's for sure.

That's good news! I hope things start looking up for you, Steve and Mei-Mei.

My big fear is that the pattern we've been having will return, that I'll start to nose ahead and a crisis will occur. I mean, I was ahead of the game a little when I got the part-time family law gig, and then the car exploded and the cat got sick. All we need is for *nothing disastrous to happen* and yes, we'll be okay. I'm hoping that's not too much to ask for.

The car exploding happened before we became lj friends. That's awful :(

I'm praying for you ... I know the one step forward and two or three steps back. It's a psyche wrecker to put it mildly.

BTW, I left a large pic under a cut in my lj for you; your name is in the subject line. Use it however you wish.

I love estate planning...the attorney I worked most closely with when I was doing law firm admin work did a lot of that. I hope this does open some doors for you, and that the time you're there goes well.

And the dragon is my *commanding officer's*, not my new boss's. That's the fun thing.

Connections are always good, especially if they like you. :)

Not exactly. LTC stands for "lieutenant colonel". My nickname on LJ for her is "Ma'am". Ma'am is the sf/fantasy fan; she and her family go to Comic-Con every year. She has the dragon in her office.

Ma'am is not my boss; E is. Ma'am cannot be my boss in the civilian world; that would be a gross breach of ethics. E does not work for Ma'am's firm; she has her own practice that is just located in the office suite. It's just that Ma'am heard E shrieking about the horrors of her temp (and E is laid back!) and Ma'am said, "Hey, I know someone who could help you...."

It gave and took. No more AGR slot, so no escape yet. Just found out.

Dammit. Hope something else opens up.
