Weekend Update: Honduras

I flew in yesterday. The base is okay; it's half Honduran Air Force and half US Joint Forces. Chow is good; some of the best I've had so far and I'm concentrating on eating mostly fruits and veggies. This is easy because of the heat; heavy food does not appeal. There's a wee PX that is almost useless, an internet cafe, a gym and a very active chapel (St Francis Parish; I assume it's not St. Michael's because it's a joint forces base and because it's under the aegis of the Capuchin Friars. No really.)

I sleep in a large tent, alone so far but am expecting roommates. All I have is a cot and no, there is no climate control. I was COLD last night since I brought flannel sheets and a thermal blanket and ended up sleeping wearing my hoodie.

Honduras itself is a shithole. Honduras is what people who are afraid of Mexicans think Mexico is like, but it's not. When you fly into Mexico City, it looks like New York on steroids with different classes of housing, apartment buildings, sky scrapers--interspersed with massive colonial churches.

It was a two hour drive to the base and I saw nothing but ramshackle cinderblock huts and burros tethered by the highway. Oh, and lots of Honduran Army in BDUs, red berets and M-16s keeping security by the side of the road. I saw no colonial churches. NONE. I'll be attending one for Good Friday but otherwise, I haven't seen any sign besides what I've seen on postcards.

Oh yeah, postcards. Most of them went out today. The postal service here is USPS so we'll see how long it takes.

No idea what MAJ E. and I will be doing for work.

So that's what's going on now. I can receive texts on my cell phone for free but sending them is .35. I will not be accepting any phone calls; if it's an emergency, text me and I'll use a DSN line.

And my unit didn't realize why I was gone; just got an e-mail from my NCO asking. >_<

More to come when I can get to it.

I am sad about the lack of colonial churches.

I'll get mine at the end of the month. I came up on early AT orders, so I'm in Austin for the next three weeks or so. I'm not skipping Egypt, though.
