The bill comes due

So now it's time to make revelations.

I've told all the folks in person who I can tell. As everyone knows, tepintzin is a soldier, and as of June 15, I head off to the Middle East for a year. I knew in August of 2008 that I was heading down range--hell, I volunteered! In January they told us where we were going, but have changed it no less than four times since. I mentioned it in LJ a couple of times in early '09, but when they kept postponing and changing the destination, I stopped talking about it. This is why I gave up drinking for Lent but abandoned that discipline. One week I would be told to await expedited orders. The next I'd be told no enlisted were going on the deployment. I was going NUTS.

But it's certain now. June 15 is go-time. Right now they're saying the whole deployment will be in Kuwait, which is completely safe. I know to expect nothing and everthing.

So to summarize in one sentence, I'm getting deployed for a year come June 15. Stand by for info on when the bon voyage party will take place; it'll be at Ritual Tavern and that's all I have planned out yet.

Oh, wow.

YOu're going to leave an address and stuff, right?
May. 4th, 2009 05:20 am (UTC)

I'll certainly be praying for you!

And yes - address wanted!
May. 4th, 2009 05:34 am (UTC)
Wow. Definitely keep us posted! I'll definitely keep you in my prayers.

I'll definitely be there!

If you need anything while you are gone or have any questions, just let me know.

Please keep up updated by LiveJounral!

Kuwait, being safe is the good thing, the only bad thing is the weather there is like 100% worse. I'm sorry. -_-

I knew that about Kuwait. Iraq is hot but dry; Kuwait is humid. Not looking forward to that at all. It's annoying not knowing how long we'll be there; it might be the whole deployment, it might not.

We'll be in the permanent party side of the base. What are the facilities like, since you've been there outside of just going to wait for your flight?

If you're permanent party, I'm SO bugging you when I hit Kuwait.

:-) Besides, I really want to meet you face to face.

I didn't know you were going on safari too! You haven't mentioned it in LJ. I'll keep you posted on my location because it'll be fun.
May. 4th, 2009 03:54 pm (UTC)
It's about 12 months out, but we'll be passing through Kuwait. :-) Hopefully, you'll still be there. (Well, you know what I mean!)

I wouldn't count on being sent to Iraq if it's a year out. Where does Afghanistan stage out of?
May. 4th, 2009 04:25 pm (UTC)
Right now, we're still being tracked for Iraq. We'll probably be covering the drawdown, actually. :-) And I have no clue where Afghanistan stages, actually.
May. 4th, 2009 05:33 pm (UTC)
I think Afghanistan routes through Kuwait on the way to Kandahar, but don't quote me on that.

Bingo. It's the Gateway to Theater. That makes it sound kinda fun.

I've been a couple bases, Virginia, Beuhring, Ali Al Salem, and Arifjan.

Virginia is a transient base, not much there but tents and trailers.

Beuhring is where a lot of units go when transitioning to Iraq. Their facilities are decent, as half of the base is permanent party. So, the transitioning units stay in big tents and the A/C goes out like a million times a day and when it's really hot, the A/C doesn't even work. But they have a decent PX and a MWR and USO, which are always super-packed. You can buy a wireless card to get on the internet, but you have to go sit in the MWR or something. They have a small movie theater there, but the screen is small and the quality and sound sucks. I saw some permanent buildings there which is what I assume permanent party stays in.

Ali Al Salem is the where all the flights go out, so again, more tents and trailers.

Arifjan is where it's at and is where all the permanent and nice facilities are. Being there is like being on a nice base in America. Their PX is like a Wal-Mart, no joke. They have Subway and all the good eats there too. That's where I went to the hospital, which is really nice. You're gonna be in luck if you go there. It's gonna be like a stateside deployment, LOL. Everything there is permanent, nice buildings and no tents.

Just to illustrate how different it is there, I was talking with the doctor and these big booms started going off and I jumped, started and he didn't seem fazed by it at all and I was like, "uh, what is that?" and he was like, "oh they are shooting off cannons for a ceremony." Which is something they would never do in Iraq because people would freak out and think it was incoming.

As far as the weather is concerned, humidity if you are near Kuwait City, which is near the water, but none of the bases I went to were out there. Kuwait City is about an hour or so drive. They stick the American bases out in the desert and what it looks like there is what you would imagine going to see a movie. Nothing but sand for as far as the eye can see, and it's horrible. No scenery at all. I remember it being extremely hot, but not humid. At least in Iraq there is a lot of scenery and trees and shrubbery, much like San Diego I guess. Especially around Baghdad it gets really lush with a lot of palm trees, greenery, and water. But out in the desert in Kuwait is absolutely nothing. Maybe Arifjan was more scenic, I don't remember. But definitely Beuhring, Virginia, and Ali Al Salem.

Anyway, good luck!

OMG, take care of yourself! Stay safe. I wish we could just have peace so all the troops could come home.
May. 4th, 2009 02:28 pm (UTC)
The troops leaving Iraq is happening. It's just a long process and what I'm doing is part of that.
May. 4th, 2009 12:21 pm (UTC)
Best of wishes to you on this new overseas gig!
May. 4th, 2009 12:45 pm (UTC)
*hugs* Good luck and be safe. Address would definitely be nice.

How come you never offer to send me your pinups?

May. 4th, 2009 04:09 pm (UTC)
So it's your turn to go to the Sandbox. Damn. I was hoping in the back of my mind that you'd be able to avoid that.

May. 4th, 2009 04:22 pm (UTC)
1. I volunteered for this in August of last year.

2. It's Kuwait. Nobody shoots at you in Kuwait.

3. I'm going to be able to come home to no credit card debt and a huge dent in student loans--and buy a house. The option is rotting in 11% unemployment San Diego.
May. 4th, 2009 10:48 pm (UTC)
Just be cautious; being in Kuwait doesn't mean you won't get shuttled to and from Iraq, depending on how the cases might go. Assume nothing.

Otherwise, it should be fun. Kuwait's got a nice setup as long as you're not in one of the staging areas like Buehring.
May. 4th, 2009 11:11 pm (UTC)
We *might* shuttle back and forth to Iraq, this is true. Given that we've had our destination changed at least four times, I expect everything and nothing.

We're going to be there in the permanent section rather than the area for people waiting for their flights. Did you see any of that? Do you know what the facilities are like?
May. 4th, 2009 11:05 pm (UTC)
I have to say, those hits on your debt sound really appealing.

Best of luck!
May. 4th, 2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
Good luck! Let God protect you.
May. 5th, 2009 02:16 am (UTC)
Wow! I'll keep you in my prayers and hope you will stay in contact with us. Mei-Mei will certainly miss you.
May. 5th, 2009 05:45 am (UTC)
Good luck and have a safe trip!
May. 5th, 2009 07:59 pm (UTC)
Good luck. I will keep you in my thoughts
